Larimar is a precious stone that was originally discovered on a beach in the Dominican Republic by the locals. It is said that this stone with a rare blue variety was unearthed because of an earthquake in 1974. 

Larimar is found in volcanic rocks and is formed when hot fluids containing silica, calcium, and other minerals seep into and fill in cavities within the rock.

The stone was rediscovered and named by Miguel Mendez after his daughter “Larissa“, and after the Spanish word “mar” which means “sea”. By combining these two words, he gave Larimar meaning.

The rediscovery of Larimar is also credited to a Peace Corps volunteer named Norman Rilling, who was working in the Dominican Republic in 1974. Rilling and Mendez were exploring the coastal town of Barahona when they came across a rock that caught their eye because of its striking blue color. After investigating further, they realized that the rock was a previously unknown type of pectolite.

This very rare type of pectolite stone varies its color from volcanic blue, deep blue, green blue and light blue color remarked with sterling silver.

The chemical formula for larimar, a very uncommon type of blue pectolite, is NaCa2Si3O8(OH). It is a mineral that belongs to the pectolite group, which is a group of silicate minerals that contain hydroxyl groups and high content of copper.

The unique sky-blue color of larimar is caused by the presence of copper (Cu) within the mineral. The copper ions substitute for some of the calcium ions in the crystal structure of the mineral. It is this substitution that gives larimar its unique color.
