Common Names – Oregano
Scientific Names – Origanum vulgare
Oregano essential oils are popular around the world for their uses in aromatherapy and other health benefits. But did you know that oregano essential oil can also be paired with crystals to enhance its healing, magical, and metaphysical properties?
A member of the mint family, oregano is a flowering perennial plant with a wide range of uses. While many other plants are also called “oregano”, the most popular variant of this plat is perhaps origanum vulgare.
Since the time of the Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians, the oregano plant has been used as a healing herb to treat various ailments including toothache and indigestion. The Ancient Greeks even believed that oregano was created by the goddess Aphrodite, as a symbol of joy and happiness.
As such, the name oregano is actually a compound of two Greek words: óros, which means mountain, and gános, which means joy.
Centuries later, the people of Mediterranea still loved to incorporate dried and fresh oregano into their cooking to enhance the flavor of their dishes. It was also believed to be an antidote for poison.
An Intro of Oregano Oil With Crystals
Before working with crystals and like many people, I only knew oregano oil and essential oil could be used for aromatherapy and other normal applications. Fresh and dried oregano is one of my go-to spices for food, but that was about it.
However, as I got to learn more about crystal healing, I learned that this humble plant offers many magical properties and metaphysical applications. It’s one of the most powerful healing essential oils, especially when combined with crystals. I felt its power immediately when I tried using it with crystals that resonated well with its own unique abilities.
Burning oregano is even said to brighten up the surroundings and purify negative energy. Hanging or potting oregano plants around the house promotes joy, while putting some under the pillow encourages psychic dreams. Those are only a few of the amazing benefits that I discovered after I began incorporating this lovely herb into my daily life.
But how about oregano essential oils, you might ask? Of course, even in its essential oil form, the oregano magical properties are still as powerful as ever. In fact, essential oils make it even easier for me to combine the powers of oregano with the latent abilities of my healing crystals.
Before we begin, please note that I’m only referring to oregano essential oil, and perhaps by extension, oregano plants. Oregano essential oil and oregano oil, though similar in name, are vastly different.
As long as it’s used with care, oregano essential oil offers tons of healing and magical benefits, especially when used with crystals. Ready to learn more about it? Let’s start.
Benefits of Oregano Essential Oil
Oregano itself has many health benefits backed by science.
Containing active ingredients like carvacrol, thymol, terpinene, caryophyllene, ocimene, and limonene, oregano has been proven to be beneficial. For instance, the herb is known to be useful in treating small intestine bacterial overgrowth. Test tube studies have also been done to prove that oregano is effective for repelling insects and healing fungal infections.
Physical Uses
Be it in the form of essential oil or herbs, oregano shows a lot of promise as a powerful healing plant. Working with oregano essential oil may help you experience these benefits:
However, before doing so, I advise doing a small patch test first. Never put pure oregano essential oil onto your skin.
Emotional Uses
In mythology, oregano is deeply tied to its supposed creator, the goddess Aphrodite. Worshipped in the ancient world as the goddess of beauty and love, Aphrodite created oregano to symbolize joy, happiness, and love.
Metaphysical Uses
Although not as well-known as its mental and physical benefits, oregano essential oil has plenty of magical and metaphysical properties, which are:
How to Use Oregano Essential Oil Safely
Extra care should be taken when using oregano essential oil–or any essential oil for that matter. Here are some tips on how to use oregano essential oil safely.
- Dilute essential oils in water or carrier oil. Avoid using pure oregano essential oil on the skin as even more than 1% concentration of it could induce skin irritation. Oregano essential oil has toxic effects which could harm you. You can dilute it in water or use a carrier oil, like jojoba, coconut, and olive. This is especially true if you’re using it on your skin or even infusing your crystals.
- Always check bottle instructions before using. This is to prevent toxicity and possible allergic reactions.
- In that regard, do a small patch test on an unbroken area of the skin. If you experience redness, rashes, and swelling, stop using the oregano essential oil and consult a doctor immediately.
- Do not use oregano essential oil if you’re using blood thinners. It may lower blood sugar even more.
- Using oregano essential oil may affect the absorption of certain nutrients, particularly zinc, copper, and iron.
- Avoid oregano essential oil products mentioning perfume oil, fragrance oil, and natural identical oil.
- Do not use oregano essential oil if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Do not use oregano essential oil near young children and pets. Keep it in a safe place when not in use.
How to Use Oregano Essential Oil With Your Crystals
Now, onto using oregano essential oils with crystals. First things first: not all crystals can be used with an essential oil. Some crystals are either too soft or contain trace metals and chemicals that could damage them when used with liquid.
A good rule of thumb to follow is to avoid crystals and stones that have a Mohs hardness level of 6 and below. Of course, there are exceptions (including selenite, surprisingly). Therefore, research the particular crystal first for do’s and don’ts before using it with essential oils.
Using essential oils with crystals varies from one to another, but if you’re not sure how to go about it, do the following:
